DIY Bunny Ears

I am majorly into headwear right now.  Having something cool on your head is the quickest way to spice up an outfit.  You can be wearing a tank and jeans with these lacy ears and look like a million bucks.  Here’s how to make them.

You will need:

  • artistic wire (can be found at any good art supply store)
  • wire cutters (don’t even think you can use scissors, you’ll ruin them)
  • a cheap headband
  • 1/2 yard of black stretch lace (can be found a most fabric suppliers)
  • a needle
  • black thread
  • black electrical tape (not shown)

Step 1: Depending on how big you want your ears to be measure out the general amount plus a bit more, you can always clip off the excess.  Once you have the amount you want, clip off with the wire cutters.  Do this two times, one for each ear.  Start to mold the ear in to the desired shape.  Some of you may want to make Minney Ears which are round, but I wanted a bunny shape.  Once you’ve done that, wrap one side around the other, making sure to have one side sicking out at the bottom.

Step 2:  Cut a square piece of the stretch lace, slightly bigger than the wire ear.

Step 3: Place the wire ear on top of the fabric and use it as a guide while you cut around it.  Leave about an inch space while you cut around it.  Cut two of these.

Step 4: Once you have you two pieces of cut lace, you can begin sewing them to the wire.  Start at the bottom sewing the two sides together nice and strong.  Fold the lace over the wire and go directly to the top and tack it.  Then sew 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock.  This will keep the lace in place as you begin to sew the whole thing.  Now you can begin to sew the rest of the lace to the wire.  Because you are using black thread it is hard to see and you can loop the thread overtop of the wire.  I did this twice to make sure it was super secure.  Once you have finished this, trim any excess lace.  Be careful not to snag the lace and make a hole.

Step 5: Now you can begin to attach the ears to the headband.  Take the longer piece of wire and wrap it around the headband where you decide you want it to be.  I wanted them to look less Playboy bunny and more of a couture bunny, so I chose to have no space between the ears.  It’s totally up to you.  Wrap around the headband, keeping in mind that the wire needs to be flat so it doesn’t dig into you head.  Clip off any extra wire with the wire cutters.

Step 6: Once you fixed the two ears in your desired location, finish off with some trusty black electrical tape.  I love this stuff, because it always finished off the band and hides any ugliness that may have happend during your project.

Step 7: STRUT & PLAY!

*let’s all have a good laugh at how hard I was concentrating on getting a good movement shot.  HAHA!  So stern and serious.  Some of them are so ridiculous, making for excellent photos!  Got a few happy ones though!

DIY – Flower Headband

I have been seeing more and more flower headbands popping up lately.  Be it Lana del Ray to fashion editorials, flowers in your hair are the new hot accessory.  So I thought it would be cool to make a headband and rock my inner flower child.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • an assortment of silk faux flowers (4 or 5 strands)
  • packing tape
  • black electrical tape
  • scissors

Step 1: You’ll need to strip the flowers of any decorations, be it leaves, baby’s breath and cheesy water drops from the flowers.  These are fake flowers and tend to have embellishments that are over the top.  So get rid of all that stuff.  Most of them slide off, but if they don’t just snip them off with your scissors.

Step 2: Take 2 flowers with the longest stems.  One at a time measure them on your head deciding where you want each flower to be.  With mine I wanted the hydrangeas to be on either side of my head.

Step 3: Once you know where the two longest flowers will be bend the head of the flower so that the stem goes off to either side forming a circle.  One flower goes one way and the other the other way.  Cross them over each other so that there is an actual circle formed.

Step 4: Tape the stems together.  They are bendy so you can really shape the circle to fit your head.

Step 5: Take the other flowers and first decide if they look good where you want them to go by holding them up.  If they do, wrap them around the other flower stems. Fix in place with tape.

Step 6: You may find some of the flowers look too big, so feel free to snip a few stems to de-poof the flowers.

Step 7: Wrap the final band with black electrical tape.

Step 8: Wear with pride!
