The other day I was reading an article by the ultra rad ladies over at Highsnobette about Choloe Sevigny and their take on the most recent write up in the NY Times about her apparent dissatisfaction toward fashion. The question of the day is whether this dissatisfaction with fashion was real or just a front to effortlessly separate herself from the masses. It is no surprise that the reason people love Sevigny so much is because of her ability to dress, act and go through life with this effortless cool. One of the lines about fashion in Sevigny’s interview was: “I’m just not as excited by it,” Ms. Sevigny said… “I don’t know if it is a reflection of what they are producing, or just my feelings toward it. I bought a pair of Birkenstocks today — let’s be real. I wanted a chunky sandal that was functional. That should tell you where I am at as far as fashion.” You might hate her for it, but she is setting the tone for young fashionistas even in her indifference. Her collaboration with Opening Ceremony in NYC has been a raging success for two years now and her TV/Film career doesn’t seem to be slowing down, but don’t take her seemingly “whatever” take on fashion the wrong way. She knows exactly what she is doing and the masses will follow. They have started already. I saw a pic of an Olsen sporting the old skool footwear just the other day. Things are trickling down…
Have you ever had a friend who was always fit. You know the one who just always had abs or always had a tight butt and they would shrug off the complements with “I never work out,” “I eat whatever I want and never gain a pound?” Models are notoriously saying these lines. I feel the same kind of feeling when I hear Chole go off on her anti fashion spiel. Is she being serious? I don’t think so, but this is just how she rolls. I think it is pretty obvious what she is doing, but I am on the fence as to whether she should just admit that fashion is still her obsession.
And this is why I think Birks are going to be sold out everywhere next Summer. The pendulum must sway back the other way and Sevigny has given it a push. So instead of skyscraper heels or perfectly pretty flats for next summer, I have no doubt that fashion followers will be sporting the chunky sandals with all sorts of outfits.
Sevigny might be tired of fashion, but I think that is what drives the industry. People are insatiable about fashion and luckily we have chicks like Sevigny to take it and say “you know what, you are boring the fuck out of me, let’s shake things up and wear Birkenstocks with a Gucci suit.”
I’m sorry, but I love it!
